Ruby Vasquez
Age: 60 (at the time of the series premiere)

Ruby Vasquez was originally from England, but from the age of 15, she lived in Portland, Oregon. She came to Hope Island on vacation where she met her future husband, a fisherman. They had one daughter--Bonita.

Even though they live and work together, Ruby and Bonita have not spoken for the past 17 years. Although this seems a strange relationship, never have mother and daughter been closer. They communicate via written notes, and it works "just fine that way". It all began when Bonita and her mother fell in love with the same man, a lighthouse repairman named Calvin Douglas. They argued bitterly about whom he really loved and stopped speaking to each other verbally. Though their anger eventually cooled, the silence continued. Strangely, this form of communication works well for them and has allowed them to live and work with each other in harmony all these years.
