Haig Sutherland

Twenty-eight year-old Vancouver native, Haig Sutherland, began acting in local theater after he graduated from Studio 58 in 1996. Since 1998, he has concentrated on a career in film and television and has landed roles in the film "Dudley Do-Right" and the television series "Cupid" and "Mercy Point". Haig is the recipient of the Vancouver Foundation Advanced Arts Study Award, the B.C. Cultural Award and the Touchstone Theater Award.

A Special PAX Interview with Haig Sutherland

Haig Sutherland portrays the endearing and mystifying Nub Flanders on PAX-TV's heart-warming new series, "Hope Island". Delightful to talk to, he's as humble and charming off-screen as Nub is on. 

Haig first heard about "Hope Island" while at a friend's place for dinner. She had an audition for one of the roles and thought there was a part Haig should read for. Simultaneously, his agent, Kim Bersonte, was securing an audition with the Vancouver casting director. 

Sutherland's second audition was to a packed room. When the producers unexpectedly asked Haig to sing, he captivated all present by throwing caution to the wind and bursting into a spontaneous rendition of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", securing himself a role.

In part, Haig attributes his "key" sensitivity as an actor to growing up with three sisters. His instinctive emotional sense of people and play is what guides him in front of the camera. 

Sutherland said, "I didn't have a lot of trouble fitting into the role. There's a lot of free rein in terms of who I want to be and what I do in front of the camera. Most of it is goofing around."

"I got a sense that it's really rare the way people get along in the production," Haig went on to say. "Cameron Daddo and Suki Kaiser are great people, great leads and work really hard. It's always about the betterment of the show with them. It's encouraging!" 

As to teaming with Duncan Fraser who portrays his boss, Brian Brewster, the 28-year old actor voices the utmost respect. "I have so much admiration for Duncan. He's a wonderful actor and very generous. He always has a lot of great ideas and a sense of play which makes things 100% easier!" 

Sutherland graduated from Studio 58 in Vancouver. A wonderful new talent, he's garnered the Vancouver Foundation Advanced Arts Study Award, the B.C. Cultural Award and the Touchstone Theatre Award. 

Sutherland looks forward to more seasons of "Hope Island" and to working in independent features. With his first year-plus in professional film and television as an indicator, audiences can count on seeing far more of Haig Sutherland, whose future seems as bright as his spirit!
